Yup, it definitely wasn't perfect! "Ye Olden Times" are typically viewed with rose colored glasses... ;)

My bigger point is that we (as an industry) used to have a way for those who benefit from the work to support the work, and in large part we tossed it to the side, in no small part because it wasn't working well.
