So, I used to keep up on Microsoft’s R&D pretty strongly (I wrote for TechRepublic for 7 years on software development, and their R&D was an area of special interest to me since it was a leading edge for what they were doing in development), and frankly… they dump a ton of money into stuff that doesn’t bear much fruit. While first-mover may be a desired strategy for Microsoft, as it is for their peers… it is one they stink at. I can’t think of a single space where they were a first mover, or if they were, that they were successful at it. That’s why I don’t agree with you. Microsoft is not a particularly good innovator. They are good at making horses faster, and integrating the horse to the barn and the barn to the hay and the hay to the field, and all done in a way that no one else can do, but it aggravates you that you use it… but they will never, ever, come up with a car.
