POCs are not done nearly often enough. And I don't mean some mid-level developer playing around with a new tool on their lunch break, or reading a lot about it on Medium and Stack Overflow. I mean the dev org taking a systematic approach to evaluate the tool, put it through its paces in a controlled, repeatable, comparable fashion, and saying "did this deliver enough benefits to justify the cost to switch?" I'm at a point where I don't even like to give estimates on projects using tools I already know without a POC, if possible. It isn't that I'm afraid of new techniques or new tools or whatever... quite the opposite. But as someone in professional services, meeting estimates and delivering measurable ROI is mandatory. I can't afford to bet the farm on something new just because someone with 2 years experience read somewhere that it's the new fun thing, and is going to be upset if we don't try it out, I need to make decisions that will provably help my clients succeed.
