“A lot of people” does not a majority make. Go to the BLS and look at just how few people work in the *entire* IT industry in the US, as an example, and then think of what percentage of them are doing the kinds of things you are thinking of. Ditto for other engineering, creative, etc. industries. Just because you personally know a lot of people doing something (I’m a software developer, and a huge portion of the people I know do things like this too) doesn’t mean it’s relevant to anywhere close to enough people that it’s relevant to them. If the total number of people doing this kind of thing clears 10% of the workforce, I’ll be truly shocked. We live in a world where a decent smartphone covers the computational needs of the overwhelming majority of people.
